Overview |
Inference Talkback™ is an award winning Integrated Development Environment for building sophisticated natural language speech recognition applications. Using Talkback™, developers can rapidly build commercial grade applications, including the call flow (in VXML)and the grammar files (in a variety of formats), using a simple drag and drop interface. Talkback™ provides developers with a wide variety of deployment options for the various speech recognition platforms and recognizers on the market today. Ultimately, the tool allows its users to develop quality end to end speech recognition solutions faster and better than ever before.
How Does It Work?
Speech recognition applications consist of grammars (definitions of how people say things) and call flow components (prompting, confirmation and clarification), which are both necessary to speech-enable specific tasks. Talkback is the only product that automates the generation of both these components simultaneously.
Talkback incorporates patent-pending artificial intelligence processes that allow developers to build sophisticated grammars without the need for manual coding. Developers or end-users can rapidly build commercial grade grammars using interactive simulations of actual conversations. Using a drag-and-drop interface and built in templates, a user can develop a first-cut interactive application in minutes.
Where Does It Fit?
As per the diagram above, Talkback is used to develop and deploy speech recognition applications that sit on top of any standard speech recognition platform. That platform will run an ASR (Automatic Speech Recognition) engine, often a TTS (Test-to-Speech) capability and a VXML Gateway. Talkback applications will automatically deploy to the majority of the major ASR, TTS and VXML Gateway technologies on the market today. This means that Talkback users are not locked into one technology platform.

Talkback™ - Built with Developer in Mind
Talkback™ has been built with ease-of-use and real developers in mind.
Extensive consultation with speech application developers and Human Factors specialists was conducted throughout the design of Talkback™.
- Talkback™ supports both remote and local processing, including 1. external database access and 2. internal logic support for loops, counters etc.
- The Talkback™ Speech Application Development environment is completely platform independent.
Significant Productivity Improvements
In an evaluation conducted by developers from Telstra Corporation, Talback™ was tested against traditional development tools.
Talback™ was shown to:
- Reduce the time taken to produce an application prototype by a factor of 10
- Reduce the time taken to produce an overall application by a factor of 4
Both applications achieved the same level of grammar accuracy. Talkback™ has been built with ease-of-use and real developers in mind. Extensive consultation with speech application developers and Human Factors specialists was conducted throughout the design of Talkback™.
